Richard Heinberg’s back yard

Richard Heinberg’s writings and videos, often in the name of the Post Carbon Institute for which he is a fellow, are particularly interesting for me at the moment. I have just finished his book ‘The End of Growth’ which provides an initially alarming view of our Peak Oil state – in economic, environmental and social terms. There is a sense of hope however; that there is an approach that will ease humanity through one of its greatest challenges ever.

The video below is a look at his ideas through the intimacy of his back yard.

Transition Network

Recently I have been following the workings of the Transition Network. A movement that has sporned many projects around the world. Formed in community groups, often referred to as Transition Towns, the movement provides a practical platform to create more resiliency in our local communities in the face of the many challenges caused by the end of a cheap fossil fuel-driven world. An amazing array of projects in local food production, transport, building and energy use are cropping up in many countries as part of the movement. This video based on the work of various Towns in Scotland gives a good example of the momentum in play.
